Auli’i Cravalho Steps Aside for Next Moana in Disney’s Live-Action Reboot

With a live-action adaptation of Disney’s “Moana” in the works, Auli’i Cravalho, the original film’s lead, has expressed no regrets about not reprising her role. She emphasized the importance of her decision by saying it “feels really important” (for her) to not be a part of it.

When Dwayne Johnson, Cravalho’s co-star, announced in April that a live-action version of the 2016 animated film was developing, speculation arose about Cravalho’s potential return. However, in a video posted on her Instagram a few weeks later, Cravalho clarified that she would only be involved as an executive producer for the film.

In an interview with TheWrap ahead of her role in “Mean Girls,” where she plays Janis ‘Imi’ike (with the character’s last name reflecting her heritage), Cravalho revealed her commitment to creating opportunities for more Pacific Islanders in Hollywood, viewing this decision as just the beginning.

Passing the baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent holds great importance for Cravalho, who expressed this sentiment, saying, “It feels really important to me to pass the baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent, and I say that with my whole chest.” She acknowledged being one of the few Pacific Islanders in AAPI spaces (Asian American Pacific Islander) and emphasized the significance of their stories being told.

Cravalho regretted that there was a lack of appropriate representation for the Pacific Islands, particularly her home state of Hawaii, both in terms of the places and the people. She aspires to contribute not only as an actress but also as someone behind the camera, advocating for increased representation in writers’ rooms and directorial roles.

Speaking about her vision for representation, Cravalho stated, “And if it has to start with me—I’m 23, but if it starts with me, so be it. I want that door to swing wide open, and I cannot wait to meet the next Moana.”

The live-action “Moana” from Disney is scheduled to be released on June 27, 2025, directed by Thomas Kail, known for “Hamilton,” in his feature film debut. The movie will be produced by Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia through Seven Bucks Productions, and Beau Flynn through Flynn Picture Co. Scott Sheldon from Flynn Picture Co. will also serve as an executive producer alongside Cravalho.
