Russian prison in the Arctic has the missing Navalny, mystery ends on the Political Prisoner Treatment
Russian prison in the north of the Arctic has the opposition figure Aleksei A. Navalny as a prisoner. This has brought a respite for his followers who were concerned about his safety and his whereabouts.
Despite concerns from his supporters, Navalny’s spokesperson, Kira Yarmysh, reassured the public on Monday that Navalny is in good health. Yarmysh made the announcement via social media, stating, “We have located Alexei. His lawyer saw him today.”
After an extensive and anxious search within Russia’s prison system following his disappearance on December 5, Navalny’s exiled associates confirmed on Monday that he is now held in a penal colony in the Yamalo-Nenets region of the Russian Arctic. Ivan Zhdanov, the head of Navalny’s anticorruption foundation, described the facility as one of the “most northern and most remote” Russian prison.
The penal colony, identified as IK-3, is situated in the Arctic settlement of Kharp, roughly 1,000 miles northeast of the prison where Navalny had been detained for much of the time since his arrest in early 2021. Though relieved by the news, Zhdanov said “Aleksei’s situation is a clear example of how the system treats political prisoners, attempting to isolate and suppress them,” in a post on social media.
