Honoring America’s Heroes on Veterans Day 2024 as Nation Salutes Service Members

Department of Veterans Affairs is honoring today, the veterans in the form of Veterans Day who served their nation, the U.S. during the First World War in 1919. That year, the war ended on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, as the Department says and has since then, been remembered as Armistice Day. Even then, the war had happened between the Allied countries and Germany.

For some workers it a great relief from their doggedly pursued vocations, when it will be a three-day off for them. Each year the day falls on Nov.11 and is nowadays, observed as Veterans Day, a much-honored federal holiday for the living veterans who served in the National Army.

Holidays offered for workers on Veterans Day

The weekend is, however, always reserved as the monthly holiday days, even if that means shifting Nov. 11 a day before or after. The observance of the day in the year 2023 happened to be incidentally on Saturday, and the celebrations took place thus, the day before on Friday. And if the holiday falls on a Sunday, it is observed the following day on Monday.

For the general public, the government has announced closure for certain organizations, government or otherwise, and also the ones that might remain open during the weekend. Amongst them, the United States Postal Service will be closed on Monday and this means that the mail won`t be carried towards their respective destinations.

With Veterans Day being a federal holiday, most of the Banks will be closed apart from federal courts and non-essential government offices. The holiday weekend also includes Driver’s license facilities and other Secretary of State’s offices to be closed in the state of Illinois.

Many schools aren`t required to remain closed and choice has been given to decide for either of the two as the Veterans Day isn’t looked upon as a “legal school holiday.” The Illinois State Board of Education says that the day might be earmarked as  “Not in Attendance” day, which means no students are engaged in learning as determined by the local school board.

The Chicago Public Schools 2024-25 calendar shows non-observance of Veterans Day as a holiday. Meanwhile, Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday, Lincoln’s Birthday, Casmir Pulaski Day and Columbus Day are included in other “Not in Attendance” days.
