US warning to North Korea as it is set to test its long-range ballistic missile
Amidst reports that North Korea is going to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile test in December, the United States has sent its nuclear-powered submarine known as USS Missouri, also called SSN-780.
The submarine arrived at the South Korean port city of Busan on Sunday, as reported by the South Korean news agency Yonhap, citing the South Korean Navy. This decision was made after Friday’s second Nuclear Consultative Group meeting between the US and South Korea in Washington.
The missile test by North Korea is being seen as an act of provocation and the United States has issued a stern warning to North Korea. It said that any kind of nuclear attack against the country or its allies is unacceptable and will result in the end of the (Kim Jong) Un regime.
In the joint statement issued by the US and South Korea, the US reiterated that “any nuclear attack by the DPRK against the ROK will be met with a swift, overwhelming, and decisive response.
The meeting happened against the backdrop of North Korea having already developed its missiles and tested them from time to time. The missiles developed by Pyongyang have been reported to have a long-range that can reach targets in South Korea, Japan and even the mainland US.
The second meeting held in Washington was part of the agreement between the two countries to share insights regarding planning and deterring the nuclear threat coming out of North Korea. The missile test, probably scheduled this month by Pyongyang, is seen as a nuclear threat, as the missile is a ballistic one that can carry nuclear warheads too. The third meeting regarding the same will be held next summer between the two countries in South Korea.
In November of last month, North Korea successfully put its reconnaissance satellite into orbit. This was believed to be part of the North Korean efforts to spy on the US and South Korean military sites.
