Volkswagen Revives Scout Brand with Rugged Electric SUV and Pickup Lineup

In a bold multi-billion-dollar move to stake its claim in the U.S. market for pickups and off-road SUVs, Volkswagen revealed two new electric vehicles under the iconic Scout brand.

The midsize Scout Terra truck and the Traveler SUV were unveiled on a Tennessee hillside and are scheduled to go into production in 2027.

International Harvester, a US-based company has been manufacturing the original Tough Scout trucks, from 1961 to the year 1980, honoring both versions.

Volkswagen has been eyeing for a share in the U.S., truck market, despite its associated high costs. The brand Volkswagen has adapted the Scout Terra and Traveler, especially for the American market, demonstrating its state-of-the-art EV technology.

Industry observers estimate the investment to be around $3 billion, despite Volkswagen not disclosing the exact figure. S&P Global Mobility analyst Stephanie Brinley claims that since “VW has no heritage in the U.S. for pickups and off-roaders,” the Scout moniker gives Volkswagen a competitive advantage.

Along with electric power, the new Scouts are designed with authentic off-road components and offer a premium interior with roomy, stylish features.

Volkswagen designed and engineered the Terra and Traveler in Michigan, where Scout has its headquarters. Both models will be assembled near Columbia, South Carolina, and are expected to qualify for full federal tax credits. Prices are set to start below $60,000, with the Terra projected at about $51,500 and the Traveler around $50,000 after incentives.

New features added by Volkswagen

These new Scout models, with vertical noses, long hoods, and sturdy roofs, revive the original Scout’s rugged aesthetic in a refined, modern style. Each features LED lights and illuminated Scout logos, offering a dramatic look. Streamlined panels, short overhangs, and reduced chrome add a contemporary flair while emphasizing off-road durability.

Both the Terra and Traveler models will feature a new body-on-frame structure commonly used in pickups, lending to their off-road strength. Designed for challenging terrain, the Scouts boast locking front and rear differentials, various suspension options, and the capacity to ford water up to three feet deep.

Inside, drivers will find a mix of traditional dials, tactile switches, and a large touch screen, all designed with off-road capability in mind. The trucks also come equipped with Scout’s zonal electrical architecture, cutting weight and enhancing efficiency – similar to Rivian’s widely praised system, which Volkswagen recently agreed to adopt in a high-profile deal.

A big shift for VW, Scout vehicles will be sold directly to consumers, bypassing traditional dealerships. While this decision has disappointed some VW dealers, the brand promises a streamlined customer experience via a single app for purchasing, service, and repairs. Scout plans to operate physical showrooms and service hubs, with around 80% of repairs handled off-site. “It’s a new brand to many, but it has a lot going for it,” notes Paul Waatti, an analyst at AutoPacific. With the growing demand for off-road EVs and a nostalgic appeal, Scout’s new line brings together three powerful trends in one vehicle series – making it a compelling choice for American drivers.
